Ballet Exams and Class Awards

Ballet Exams and Class Awards

Ballet Exams and Class Awards are a wonderful way to celebrate each dancer's progress, build confidence, and work towards a special achievement. They give dancers the opportunity to showcase the skills they have been developing throughout the year and perform in front of an official RAD examiner.

This year, we are excited to offer RAD Exams and Class Awards in October at Hobsonville Community Hall. Exam dates are expected to fall between Sunday 18 October and Tuesday 20 October, although final dates will be confirmed closer to the time.

What is a Class Award?

A Class Award is a lovely introduction to the examination experience. Dancers prepare their ballet exercises and perform either an imaginative movement sequence (Pre-Primary) or a choreographed dance (Primary), just as they do in their regular classes.

For Class Awards, the teacher (me!) enters the examination room with the dancers and guides them through their familiar activities in a supportive and encouraging environment. This helps dancers feel comfortable and confident while enjoying a positive first examination experience.

Dancers who participate receive an assessment report, certificate, and medal.

This year, both our Pre-Primary and Primary dancers have the opportunity to enter a Class Award, helping to prepare them for future RAD examinations from Grade 1 Ballet onwards.

What is an Exam?

While the word "exam" can sound a little daunting, RAD ballet exams are designed to be a positive and rewarding experience.

Exams provide dancers with a meaningful goal to work towards and an opportunity to present their learning in a formal setting. The skills developed throughout the process extend far beyond dance, helping dancers build confidence, dedication, resilience, focus, and a sense of achievement.

Throughout my years of teaching, I have seen firsthand the positive impact exams can have on young dancers. Not only do they leave with a wonderful sense of accomplishment, but they often return to class with increased motivation, focus, and pride in what they have achieved.

Most importantly, exams are entirely optional and are a personal choice for each dancer and family.

Dancers who participate in an exam receive an official result, certificate, and medal.

What to wear?

Dancers are required to wear the official studio uniform for Class Awards (‘Jesse’ Leotard, ‘Emily’ Skirt, Ballet Socks, Ballet Shoes). Hair will be done in a ballet bun by Jess on the day.
